Smart grid transmission: Why Tres Amigas is attracting international attention

By: Smart Grid Network

Tres Amigas is a $1.5 billion effort to link three of America’s transmission grids. Although it gets little attention in the U.S., it is making waves in Europe and Japan. When completed, the transmission infrastructure could give Southwest wind and solar access to large power markets in other parts of the country. The western grid needs 150,000 MW of power to meet demand. At the outset, Tres Amigas will be able to transfer 750 MW between the western and eastern grids.
